Jakarta, Indonesia, 2018
Garuda Baru means “the new eagle” and is the name of the Indonesian National Soccer team of street children taking part at Street Child World Cup in Moscow, Russia, from 10th to 19th May 2018. More than 200 street-connected children from across the world have come together in Russia for their own boys and girls international football tournaments, festival of arts and Congress for their rights. The Street Child World Cup uses the power of football to raise awareness and tackle the widespread stigma faced by street-connected children, inspiring countries, governments and communities to better protect, respect and support street-connected children worldwide.
In portraying these proud boys and their coaches, I wanted to pay tribute to the rich and diverse Indonesian cultures by having them wearing headgears coming from Papua, Jakarta, Bali and Sumatra.
